This bug is User 501 gets the admin bit after migration. It was filed on 2007-05-25 at 13:29 PDT.

Summary:

When migrating from an older Mac, user 501 is not stripped of its admin bit if it didn’t have it on the previous Mac.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Buy a G4 Cube.
  2. Install Tiger on it.
  3. Create a second account and make that your admin account.
  4. Login to the new admin account and pull the admin bit from the first account (UID 501).
  5. Buy a Mac Pro.
  6. Shut down the Cube.
  7. Remove the hard drive from the Cube, put it in a FireWire 400 enclosure, and plug it into the Mac Pro.
  8. Set up the Mac Pro.
  9. Go through the Migration Assistant to bring everything over from the Cube’s drive.

Expected Results:

Migration Assistant notices that 501 didn’t have the admin bit on the previous Mac, and strips it from 501 on the new Mac.

Actual Results:

User 501, who didn’t have the admin bit on the Cube, suddenly “gains” the admin bit on the Mac Pro.

Regression:

None known.

Notes:

I prefer to run as non-admin normally (as an extra security measure), so I removed the admin bit from my normal user account. I was surprised to find that the admin bit had magically come back after moving to the Mac Pro.
