Apple Bug Friday! 52

2007-03-23 22:53:08 -08:00

This bug is Apple applications use a modal window for print progress. It was filed on 2007-03-09 at 14:06 PST.

Summary:

The progress panel for the Print command uses a modal window, rather than a sheet.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. In Safari, open any webpage. In TextEdit, create or open any document.
  2. Choose “Print from the File menu”.
  3. If you don’t want to waste trees to test this bug, click the PDF pull-down menu and choose “Save to PDF…”, and select a destination for the PDF file. If you don’t mind wasting trees (or don’t have a printer connected), just click Print.

Expected Results:

The Print sheet rolls up, and a new sheet unrolls to present the progress for the print operation.

Actual Results:

The Print sheet rolls up, and a new modal panel appears to present the progress for the print operation.

Regression:

None known, except that this wasn’t a problem in the classic Mac OS, since it didn’t have sheets to replace the modal dialog with.

Notes:

The problem with a modal panel is that it blocks everything else in the application. If there’s any reason to do this, the panel doesn’t mention it. Meanwhile, the user is inconvenienced by not being able to browse other webpages or edit other documents or do anything else in the same application.
